The Summary of Board of Directors Meeting
  1. Rose Parade Parody to raise awareness:  Sunday, February 18th at Convention Center
  2. Evening meeting venue change starting January 25th (spouses/etc.) night will be at the Lodge-A Holiday Inn on Village Drive.
  3. July 4 BBQ committee:  Chairperson:  Marcus Dietz; Co-Chair Andy Brakebill; Advisor Ron Peavy; Assistant Dave Johnson
  4. Treasurer’s report: Dave Johnson – We are solvent and on budget.
  5. Bowling Tournament to benefit Million Meals:  In the Spring (more info to follow).
  6. Dental Screening: Andy Suhay in the process of contacting dentists, setting dates.
  7. Big Bear’s Got Talent:  Saturday, February 176h at the PAC.
  8. Rotary 4-Way Test Speech Contest: Wednesday, February 28th, at the District Office (Moonridge)
  9. Sweetheart Ball:  Wednesday, February 14th at the Lodge.  Cocktails/visiting 5 p.m., Dinner at 6 p.m.  $70 per person.  Proceeds to Valley Foundations upon Application.
  10. Officers for 2018-2019, Almost filled. 
  11. District Conference:  May 18, 19, 20.  Double Tree in Cathedral City.  Please make an effort to attend.  Go to www.visitrotary.com to register.  Login and go to calendar.  Scroll down to District Conference and Register.  Any difficulty email Dave Johnson at david@johnsononeill.com I’ll get you registered.  Rotarians who present receipt for conference will be reimbursed. 
  12. Stocking Stuffing venue for 2018 will change.  More information to come.
  13. Next Board meeting: Monday, February 5, 2018; 6 pm social, 6:30 meeting.  Presumably at Keenan’s!
Announcements: 
Happy Birthday to Past President Michael Beveridge.
  1. DDF (District Designated Funds) went to Peanut Butter Project $4,000 and Kenya’s Mother and Child project $2,000.  This will be matched by Rotary International and the total will be $8,000.  Interact funds will be used for local projects that are not matched by Rotary International.  Early act has raised $1,500 and the interact has donated $500. 
  2. Ron MacDonald.  Arlington Anthology (writer). All meetings will be at the lodge on January 25th.
  3. February 28th Four Way Test Program. 
  4. John Friel – Final hospital room has been completed.  Thank you Tony Tamberchi. 
 
 
Dinner:
The club meeting was held in the small downstairs room.  Dinner was plated.  There was a choice of Beef and Venison Meat Loaf, Salmon, and a Notti Burger.
 
Recognition Ron Peavy
  1. Michael Beveridge: Happy Birthday – Been on the planet for 62 years.  $62 for Foundation
  2. Ron Baker:  Have been in Rotary for 36 years.  $10 Dollars. 
  3. John Friel: Saw his picture in the Grizzly.  Looked like he was in Rehab.  $10
  4. Mary Suzuki: What is the name of the speech contest for our students.  The four-way speech contest. 
  5. Tony Tamberchi:  Great Rotarian.  Tony was sharing his diet when he worked at Ihop.  Too much Bacon and finally had a heart attack.  Woke up and changed his diet.  $10.
  6. Keenan Warner:  Free pass.  Why does everybody say find your seat and not your chair.  Quote the Four way test.  Completed $5.00.   
Program:
John Niederkorn:  Born and raised in Riverside and went to public Schools.   Went to UC Santa Barbara.  Crazy Time.  Met Kathy (wife) in Riverside.  She was Friends with his Mother.  Moved to Park City which was in the process of changing from a mining town to a Resort.  After Park City he went back to Santa Barbara worked in an antique shop, refurbishing furniture.  Few months later.  Couldn’t make a living!  Too many fumes.  Left the shop.  He was seeing Kathy on a regular basis.  Kath was an elementary school teacher.  Back to school UCR and get a teaching credential.  Challenge is to teach small children.  Kindergarten student teaching.  No men at that time in kindergarten classes.  Taught k-2 grades.  Some children could read, and others could not.  Reading prepares you for life.  Went back to UCR for a masters in reading specialist.  Then to Middle School.  If he could deal with middle school students, he could deal with anything.  Learned to deal with the hormonal set.  Need a sense of humor.  Some students could not read but in a second-grade level.  Back to UCR (masters) and became an administrator to be a principle.  Bear City Unified had an opening.  North shore principle at 32 years of age.  Worked in that capacity for 6 years and then to middle school Principle.  6 years there.  Superintendents were unsuccessful because they spent too much money.  Bargaining units were always asking too much.  Need to manage resources.  Back to UCR for PhD.  Middle school principle and went to office as business director.  In 2004 moved to Vacaville as the CBO of a school district.  The district is broke!   If a district is broke, then the State appoints a District Administrator.  After proposition 13 passed the State provided more funding.  The San Bernardino area is lowest on the totem pole.  Finally changed a little bit.  State requires a percentage of revenue go to schools.  Getting better.  Many problems at Vacaville.  It took a year or two to get things fixed.  Then the Great recession in 2008.  Layoffs during the recession.  2012 first saw the uptick.  Sorry it is not more of a story.  It was a great Craft talk from a Rotarian who knows how to teach and to manage schools.
