Big Bear Lake Rotary Club - eBulletin 2 9 2017

The Preliminaries

President Mike Beveridge gaveled the meeting to order promptly at 6:30, and offered the evening's invocation.

"This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Rotary Club of Big Bear Lake.  1947 - nine years before I was born; wow!  As President of the club this year I have possession of a large bell, mounted in a box with the names of Past Presidents.  More than a few of those names are names of the men and women who built this community.  May we each reflect for a moment on the fact we have the honor of being members of an organization that has such a positive effect both locally and around the world.  May we stand tall with this knowledge, and renew our commitment to making the World better than we found it."

Wonderful words President Mike!

Scott Huele led the Pledge of Allegiance.

The group recited the 4-Way Test.  For an interesting history and context of the 4-Way Test, click the link: http://thefourwaytest.com/history-of-the-four-way-test/  Great information to know!

Al Ferguson played "What a Wonderful World" (lyrics provided) and R-O-T-A-R-Y.  This evening's performance rivaled that of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, almost.

Tonight's guests - Lynn Fowler, Kristine Yoshida, Cindy Caretto, Jeanette Harris, and Anne Bush.  The Ladies were given a warm welcome.

Dinner was Fried Chicken and Mashed Potatoes with Coleslaw and Veggies.  Very well done!

The Meeting

President Mike discussed a change in the meal regime for each Thursday night's meeting.  The idea is for members to check their names from a list before the meeting, selecting a pre-planned meal from a list, and eating later in the meeting rather than at the beginning.

A reminder that February 11th is the night of the Sweetheart Ball and that February 18th at 6 p.m. is Big Bear's Got Talent (formerly known as Big Bear Idol) at The PAC.

The next Board of Directors meeting will be held at the East Sugarloaf Clubhouse (AKA Keenan Warner's humble abode at 1032 Heritage Trail, Big Bear City).  Please bring a snack or bottle of wine (neither are really mandatory but we all know how Keenan loves his wine).

There will be a Fireside at the same East Sugarloaf Clubhouse (AKA Keenan Warner's humble abode at 1032 Heritage Trail, Big Bear City) on February 20th at 6 p.m.  All are welcome.

13th of march is the dental screening.

Club Foundation board members have dwindled to 3 in recent months.  Tonight three people were appointed… Anne Bush – President.  Annette Karns – Secretary, Gloria Lopez – Treasurer.

Two large donation checks were received this week; $5,500 from the Convention Center and $6,285 from R. Kun.  President read a letter from Monica Marie at the Convention Center and Dave Johnson informed the group Jennifer Kun has an open invitation to dinner.

Recognition

When the Dynamic Duo were introduced, Keenan thanked the crowd for the sound of one hand clapping.  Ron said he was convinced that in spirit it was a standing ovation.  The following people were recognized for one reason or another, and some for no reason at all.

  • Chris Costlow for volunteering to find out about a storage unit provided by Big Bear Disposal.

  • John Callahan for volunteering to fix whatever leaks the storage unit may have.

  • Dave Caretto for Feb 16th; which was the rainiest day of the year in 1980.  In addition, he recognized for being married to his beautiful wife 37 years ago on that day.

  • Dave Caretto for being former Mayor of Big Bear Lake.  No longer "Hizzoner", Dave was commended for getting out of the job of Mayor BEFORE the sure to be contentious Monday Feb 13th City Council meeting.

  • Anne Bush for being on top of the mountain often, but “not showing up”.  Donated.

  • Al Ferguson for providing a truck for not only ferrying the Santa Visit items from the airport to MWD, but taking them back in said provided truck.  Al offered to donate $.30
  •
  • Cliff Fowler for Fake News, and Real News.  FAKE - The truck that blocked Hwy 18 to Lucerne Valley recently was NOT a Pewag truck carrying chains.  REAL - Cliff was asked to deliver chains to the stuck truck. Donation made.

  • Ron Baker – for being an Oregon Duck fan and wearing school colors; shirt and shoes. Donation made.  Ducks were up by eight over UCLA at that moment, but lost in the end.

  • Maria Martel – for being the subject of a Letter to the Editor in The Grizzly.  IOU given.

  • Kristine Yoshida – Keenan recognized Kristine for his being in her office on Rotary business and being commandeered into a Dentist’s Chair for the purpose of having a tooth pulled.  Donation made.

  • Kristine Yoshida – Thursday morning storm postponed dental screening – when the screening supplies were removed from her premises Ron was there and heard screaming… it was Keenan.  Ron smiled inside.

  • Carol Bremer – for January 6th.  It was her birthday.  Carol is Plenty-Nine this year.  Carol says she and Don celebrated all week.  Ron said "Hush my Wife might hear that!" $100 toward her next Paul Harris.

  • President Mike for failing to announce Jeannette Harris as guest.  Also because his long nightmare quest to be replaced as President is over.  It’s Keenan.

The Program

Cindy Caretto spoke for The Soroptimist International in Big Bear Valley and gave a very interesting and informative PowerPoint Presentation on the ongoing Big Bear Valley Pool issue.  Kristine Yoshida and Lynne Fowler backed her up.  Jeannette Harris put the information together.  The link below will take you to a PDF version of their PowerPoint presentation.

Thank You Very Much Ladies!
